Arsenal and Chelsea Target John Stones Headed for Inter Milan Move

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have both suffered a significant setback in their defensive transfer plans, as former Manchester City centre-back John Stones edges closer to a move to Italy. The 32-year-old England international, who played an integral role in the Three Lions' run to the World Cup semi-finals, is currently available as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite heavy interest from both Premier League sides, reports indicate that Stones is in advanced talks to join Serie A giants Inter Milan. An agreement is reportedly in place for the defender to sign a two-year contract at the San Siro, with the deal expected to be finalized shortly.

Arsenal had earmarked Stones as a potential candidate to reinforce their backline amid fitness concerns regarding William Saliba. The French defender played through a back problem to help the Gunners secure the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final, where they ultimately fell on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain. Saliba subsequently suffered a further injury set-back during France's World Cup semi-final against Spain, prompting Mikel Arteta to explore defensive cover.

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had identified Stones as a prime target to bolster the Blues' defensive depth. Stamford Bridge officials have already been active in the market, securing a £52million deal for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, alongside the additions of Marco Palestra and Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chevarria following Marc Cucurella’s £52million departure.

Stones leaves English football following a trophy-laden decade with Manchester City, during which he claimed six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Champions League. Though his final campaign in Manchester was disrupted by injuries—limiting him to just 15 appearances across all competitions—his international form proved he remains a top-tier defensive option.

Unless a late plot twist materializes, the experienced centre-back will bypass staying in the Premier League to begin a new chapter in Italy under the lights of the San Siro.
