Liverpool’s summer transfer window faces a growing test of resolve as Serie A champions Inter Milan intensify their pursuit of Curtis Jones. The Italian giants have returned with a fresh approach via intermediaries, signalling a willingness to raise their offer to €35m (£30m) for the 25-year-old midfielder. With Jones now into the final 12 months of his deal at Anfield, the prospect of losing a home-grown asset on a free transfer next summer leaves the Reds weighing up a difficult decision.

Inter Escalate Midfield Pursuit

Inter’s latest move represents a continued push to secure the England international after earlier groundwork was turned down. Liverpool rejected an initial €25m (£21.7m) bid back in June. While one report indicates Inter subsequently saw a €32m offer turned away, intermediaries have now communicated the Italian side's readiness to hit €35m.

Despite this increased figure, the offer still falls short of Liverpool's benchmark. The club values Jones closer to €40m (£34.3m)—a valuation influenced by the market price Tottenham paid for Conor Gallagher in January. Inter, who recently added free agent John Stones to their ranks, remain determined, encouraged by how former Premier League talent has adapted to Italian football.

Contract Realities and Squad Dynamics

For Liverpool, the situation is complicated by both contract timelines and squad hierarchy. Head coach Andoni Iraola has noted the importance of retaining Jones and preserving the local identity within the squad. However, Jones has struggled to cement a place as a guaranteed starter, finding himself behind Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister in the midfield pecking order.

The player's frustration over his role was underlined last season under Arne Slot and resurfaced during Liverpool's pre-season tour. Following Wednesday's friendly victory over Wrexham in New York, Jones was caught on camera in a heated exchange with Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas. The disagreement centered on Szoboszlai passing the captain's armband to Tsimikas rather than Jones when substituted. Tsimikas threw the armband to the floor during the argument, and Jeremie Frimpong stepped in to mediate as Jones and Szoboszlai continued bickering off the pitch.

Liverpool's Balancing Act

With squad depth issues remaining in defense and the team yet to replace Mohamed Salah, Liverpool must decide whether to cash in or hold firm. Accepting Inter's valuation would yield a significant fee for an academy graduate, but losing Jones would strip the squad of a homegrown player just as Iraola begins his tenure.
