IOC Dismisses Complaint Over Infantino and Trump Alignment

FIFA president Gianni Infantino will avoid an investigation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after complaints were raised over his relationship with US President Donald Trump and an unprecedented disciplinary decision involving striker Folarin Balogun.

Human rights organization FairSquare submitted a complaint to the IOC targeting Infantino, who sits as an IOC member. The submission highlighted FIFA's choice to put a World Cup suspension for US forward Balogun on hold, a move that followed personal lobbying from Trump. However, the Olympic governing body has ruled that it cannot intervene.

IOC Cites Lack of Jurisdiction

An IOC spokesperson confirmed that its ethics commission evaluated FairSquare's submission but determined it falls outside its mandate. The commission noted that international federations operate with independent governance under the Olympic Charter. Because the allegations relate to internal FIFA management, sporting regulations, and government relations, the IOC holds no jurisdiction over the matter.

FairSquare heavily criticized the outcome, labeling the jurisdictional rejection "absurd" and arguing that it highlights the inability of global sporting institutions to enforce political neutrality and governance standards consistently.

The Balogun Disciplinary Controversy

At the center of the dispute is the decision by FIFA's disciplinary committee to suspend Balogun's automatic one-match ban on July 5. Trump publicly stated the following day that he had directly contacted Infantino to request a review of the red card. Reports indicate that disciplinary committee chair Mohammad Al Kamali acted individually to pause the sanction, without public justification from FIFA regarding the unique circumstances of the deferral.

The intervention provoked sharp backlash across European football. UEFA publicly branded the suspension deferral "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable," while UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin chose not to attend the final in protest over FIFA's broader governance. Balogun himself acknowledged the situation, stating he anticipated the move would trigger significant controversy and create tension within the squad.

Broader Governance Protests

The IOC filing builds on a separate formal grievance lodged by FairSquare with FIFA's own ethics committee last December. That initial filing questioned Infantino's public backing of Trump's policies, as well as the creation and presentation of a FIFA Peace Prize to the US president at the 2026 World Cup draw. While FIFA acknowledged receipt of that earlier complaint, no further status updates have been provided.
