Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge of Manchester United’s first-team training on Tuesday morning, according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell. That points to continuity at Carrington for now, but it does not settle the question of whether Carrick will still lead the team at the weekend.

United’s players had Monday off after Sunday’s 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth. Club chief executive Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox and head of recruitment Christopher Vivell were at Carrington, spending much of the day together. Carrick arrived in the afternoon to watch a friendly between United’s under-21s and Hull City. The coach and officials later left, and the club had not communicated a decision on his future.

Whitwell wrote on October 26 that he would expect Carrick to take training the following morning. The report leaves open the possibility of a change, but there is no confirmed announcement that the former midfielder has been relieved of his duties.

The pressure is plain. The source says United have fallen to 16th in the Premier League and have gone eight matches across all competitions without a win. It also reports that Carrick’s prospects of taking charge for the weekend trip to West London are improving as time passes, though the situation remains unresolved.

The report further says Carrick had publicly clashed with captain Bruno Fernandes after the defeat to Como. Eddie Howe is described as the leading candidate to replace him, with Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte named as alternatives. Those are reported possibilities, not confirmation of a change in the dugout.

For now, the immediate signal is a training session expected to proceed under Carrick. Manchester United’s hierarchy has yet to make its position public, leaving the club’s next step—and who will lead the team against Chelsea—uncertain.
