Scottish Clubs Exercise Postponement Powers Ahead of Crucial European Play-offs

Scottish Premiership sides competing on the continent have triggered league rules to clear their domestic schedules ahead of pivotal European play-offs. All five clubs involved in UEFA competitions have chosen to postpone their league fixtures originally set for Saturday, 22 August, prioritising two-legged ties across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Under regulations introduced in April 2025, teams playing in European competition no longer require the agreement of their opponents to delay a match. The rule grants clubs unilateral authority to postpone domestic fixtures falling directly between critical qualification legs, with rearranged games set to be played in midweek on either 8/9 or 15/16 September.

Guaranteed Delays for Glasgow Giants

Celtic and Rangers are both assured of participating in August play-off ties, locking in postponements for their respective domestic matches. Reigning champions Celtic, who were knocked out at the Champions League play-off stage by Kairat Almaty last term, await their opponents. Their scheduled trip to face St Johnstone has been postponed.

Rangers' home clash with St Mirren is also off. The Ibrox side are guaranteed a play-off spot in either the Europa League or Conference League, having already been drawn against Polish team Jagiellonia Bialystok in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Conditional Schedule Changes for Remaining Contenders

For Scotland's other European hopefuls, postponements depend on upcoming preliminary results:

* Hearts: Trail 4-0 on aggregate against Sturm Graz in Champions League qualifying. Unless they stage a dramatic comeback and subsequently lose in the third round—which would send them directly to the Europa League group phase—they will enter a play-off, delaying their match against Falkirk.

* Motherwell: Currently hold a 2-0 aggregate lead over Faroese outfit HB in the Conference League second qualifying round. Reaching the play-offs will postpone their fixture with Aberdeen.

* Hibernian: Face a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Kosovan side Malisheva. Their meeting with Kilmarnock will only be pushed back if they turn the tie around and progress to the play-off round.

With Dundee United versus Dundee standing as the only fixture unaffected by potential European ties, the Scottish top flight faces a heavily altered weekend schedule as clubs focus on securing group stage football.
