Concerns over Tottenham Hotspur's major summer signing Mateus Fernandes have been dismissed, with the midfielder's absence from recent training down to workload management rather than a serious fitness blow.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters can breathe a sigh of relief following social media speculation regarding summer arrival Mateus Fernandes. Rumours swirled that the Portuguese midfielder had sustained a major knee issue during the club's pre-season preparations, but those fears have proven to be false.

The 22-year-old joined Spurs from West Ham last month for an £85million fee as part of a significant transfer spend. Fernandes made an immediate impression during early pre-season fixtures against MK Dons and Auckland, notably scoring a long-range volley in his first outing. However, recent video footage showing him observing a training session from the sidelines sparked widespread concern online.

Workload Management Under De Zerbi

Rather than nursing an injury, Fernandes is simply having his physical load carefully monitored. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi and his coaching team are managing player fitness based on factors such as fatigue, potential illness, and travel.

De Zerbi’s demanding, high-intensity tactical system requires exceptional physical conditioning. To prepare the squad for the upcoming campaign, long-time strength and conditioning coach Agostino Tibaudi is pushing the players' limits, leading the staff to strategically rotate individual workloads during sessions and exhibition matches.

Pre-Season Selection Plans

While Fernandes is unlikely to feature in the starting lineup for Tottenham's upcoming friendly against Sydney FC in Australia, his absence is purely precautionary. Several squad members have been granted similar breaks during the opening weeks of pre-season to manage their recovery.

Meanwhile, Spurs are set to increase match minutes for several other senior players against Sydney FC. The coaching staff is also monitoring returning international players—including Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Kevin Danso, and Lucas Bergvall—as they build up their training intensity ahead of the new season.
