Manchester United’s search for certainty around the manager’s position has taken a fresh turn: Didier Deschamps is not interested in taking the job, according to Friday’s gossip reports. The former France coach has reportedly told the club he will not pursue the role, even as Michael Carrick’s future remains in doubt.

There is still support for Carrick within United’s hierarchy, the reports say. Sunday’s match against Aston Villa is viewed as a key moment in the debate over his future. No result or decision is given, leaving the immediate focus on whether that fixture changes the mood at Old Trafford.

The managerial uncertainty sits alongside a busy set of transfer rumours. Arsenal and Manchester United are both said to be tracking Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier, 27. Arsenal are also among the European clubs interested in Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi, 22, who represents Germany at Under-21 level.

Elsewhere, Tottenham reportedly retain the right to match a bid for Harry Kane as part of the England striker’s new Bayern Munich deal. Kane is 33, and the report frames the clause as a right for Spurs rather than a confirmed move or offer.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are linked with Eintracht Frankfurt and Germany defender Nnamdi Collins, 22. Liverpool are also reported to be preparing to increase their interest in Fenerbahce full-back Archie Brown, 24, while goalkeeper Alisson, 34, is attracting attention from Flamengo in Brazil.

Newcastle United are said to have set their sights on signing England striker Ivan Toney from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli in January. In another forward story, Eintracht Frankfurt are hopeful of re-signing Nottingham Forest’s French attacker Arnaud Kalimuendo, 24. Roma, meanwhile, are considering Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, 22, as one option to strengthen their squad in January.

These remain reported interests and possibilities, not completed deals. For United, the clearest immediate question is still the one around Carrick: Deschamps is reportedly out of the picture, while Sunday’s meeting with Villa looms as a significant test.
