Joe Gomez Injury Delays Season Start but Will Not Alter Liverpool Transfer Strategy

Liverpool’s pre-season preparations have taken an early hit after defender Joe Gomez picked up a muscle injury just minutes into the club's friendly against Sunderland in Nashville. New manager Andoni Iraola confirmed the blow, revealing that the England international is set to miss the start of the Premier League campaign.

Despite the defensive strain, the setback is not expected to force Liverpool back into the transfer market for a center-back replacement.

Iraola Outlines Gomez Recovery Timeline

Gomez was forced off early in the first half during the victory against the Black Cats after complaining of a muscle issue. While Iraola refrained from detailing a precise recovery date, he admitted the defender will likely face roughly a month on the sidelines.

"Joe has a muscle injury," Iraola explained. "It’s a normal muscle injury, [but] I think it’s going to be impossible to have him for the start of the season because we are not so far [away]."

The projected timeframe rules Gomez out of Liverpool's Premier League opener away at Newcastle United on August 23, with the defender also expected to sit out the subsequent home fixture against Nottingham Forest.

Threadbare Rearguard and Jacquet's Impending Debut

Gomez's absence exacerbates a delicate defensive situation for the Reds. Liverpool are already light on central options, with Giovani Leoni currently sidelined by injury and Virgil van Dijk training at Kirkby.

However, relief is on the horizon in the form of Jeremy Jacquet. The young defender, who arrived from Rennes earlier this summer, has missed pre-season action so far while recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in the spring. Iraola revealed that Jacquet is lined up to make his debut in Liverpool's upcoming friendly against Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday, August 2.

Jacquet is set to be integrated alongside several high-profile teammates who were granted extended rest following the World Cup, including Florian Wirtz, Alex Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch.

No Plan to Force Transfer Market Moves

Despite the temporary shortage at the back, Liverpool are not expected to sign a fresh central defender to cover for Gomez. The club's internal hierarchy remains set on its current squad plan as Iraola builds toward his first competitive fixture in charge.

Having recorded wins over Sunderland and Wrexham during their pre-season tour, Liverpool will continue managing player workloads slowly before traveling to St James' Park later this month.
