Max Dowman’s Three-Match Ban Stands as Arsenal Appeal Fails

The FA has upheld Max Dowman’s red-card suspension after Arsenal’s appeal was dismissed, leaving the 16-year-old set to miss the club’s next three fixtures.
Arsenal’s appeal has failed, and Max Dowman will miss the club’s next three fixtures. The Football Association confirmed an independent commission rejected the claims that his dismissal against Fleetwood Town was wrongful or that the punishment was excessive.
The 16-year-old was shown a red card in the 85th minute of Arsenal’s shock defeat to the League Two side. He kicked out at Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal after Neal had made a heavy challenge from behind. Arsenal argued that Dowman had been treated harshly and that the challenge could have left him seriously injured.
The commission’s written reasons have not yet been published. For now, the outcome is clear: the ban remains in place, and Arsenal’s attempt to overturn it has been dismissed.
The incident also put Dowman’s reaction under scrutiny. Mikel Arteta appeared angry as he spoke to the teenager when he left the pitch. After Tuesday’s defeat, Arteta said he had warned Dowman to expect heavy challenges and urged him not to react.
“When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate, it was very clear,” Arteta said.
The FA’s definition of violent conduct covers a player using or attempting to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, whether or not contact is made. The commission rejected Arsenal’s arguments on both the dismissal and the length of the punishment.
The timing adds to Arsenal’s selection pressure in wide areas. Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Noni Madueke missed the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Fleetwood, and Arsenal face a trip to Anfield on Sunday. Dowman’s suspension now removes another option for the next three fixtures.
The appeal outcome closes one part of the Fleetwood fallout, but the episode leaves a difficult balance for Arsenal: protecting a young player from forceful challenges while ensuring he does not respond in a way that brings a red card. For Dowman, the immediate consequence is fixed—three matches out.
