Pierre Sage remains in charge for now, but Crystal Palace’s poor run has left little room for another setback. A defeat at Tottenham on Saturday could cost him his job.

Pierre Sage has been given more time at Crystal Palace, but the reprieve comes with the pressure still mounting. A defeat at Tottenham on Saturday could end the Frenchman’s spell in charge, with Palace’s recent performances leaving little margin for error.

The immediate blow was a 2-0 loss to Newcastle. It followed a 5-0 defeat by Brighton, after which Sage had already been warned that results needed to improve quickly. Two wins in eight league games have added to the concern, and the Newcastle defeat offered little to suggest Palace had found a way out of their slump.

There were glimpses of threat before the break. Dwight McNeil created an opening with a promising run, but Daichi Kamada sliced his finish. Jean-Philippe Mateta dragged another effort wide, while McNeil later sent a low pass through an unoccupied six-yard box without a Palace player arriving to meet it.

Those moments did not develop into sustained pressure. The match was short on quality in the first half, but Newcastle found a decisive gear after the interval. Osula turned in Jacob Murphy’s cross two minutes after the restart. Joe Willock then had a goal ruled out for offside before Harvey Barnes finished a passing move to make it 2-0.

That brief spell was enough to settle the contest—and sharpen the questions around Sage. Palace’s attacking threat faded, and Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček was called on to save efforts from Adam Wharton and Darío Osorio in the second half. The home crowd’s boos reflected the growing frustration.

The challenge for Sage is not simply to stop the defeats. Palace need a performance that restores belief, and the trip to Tottenham arrives with his position openly at stake. The facts are stark: another heavy loss has already been followed by a narrow defeat, and Saturday’s result could determine whether the club’s patience runs out.

For Palace, the next match is now more than another chance to collect points. It is a test of whether Sage can turn the mood and give his side a reason to believe the season can still be redirected. For the manager, the time he has been granted may be brief.
