Manchester United’s comeback against Roma brought relief, but Paul Merson says it should not be mistaken for proof that the deeper problems have disappeared. His message ahead of Aston Villa’s visit is direct: Bruno Fernandes belongs in the team, and United must show they can deliver over more than short bursts.

United recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 in the Champions League, a result that showed character. But Merson believes the performance still leaves questions for Michael Carrick, particularly about the side’s ability to sustain its level. He pointed to United’s strong first half against Chelsea and spells against Roma, arguing that brief periods of quality are not enough across a full match.

“You need 70 or 75 minutes of good football, not 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there,” Merson said. His concern is that the dramatic finish against Roma could distract from the work still required. The comeback was a significant moment, but, in his view, it does not automatically mean United have turned a corner.

Merson was equally firm about Fernandes. The midfielder had been left out against Roma, but Merson argued that United need their best players on the pitch when results are difficult. He also praised Fernandes for having the courage to take a penalty again after missing the first attempt.

“I think Bruno Fernandes has to play for Manchester United. He’s their best player,” Merson said. Even when Fernandes is not at his best, he believes United have no better option to call on. The point is not simply about one selection: Merson sees the midfielder as central to giving the side a chance to win.

Matheus Cunha, meanwhile, faces a different challenge. Merson likes the forward’s passion but wants more dependable performances, saying he cannot swing from a nine one week to a four the next. At Manchester United, he argued, the expectation is to deliver a solid standard week after week, rather than rely on occasional standout displays.

The next test arrives against Aston Villa. Merson does not view the Roma result as a turning point and said he is more interested in what United produce this weekend. He believes Villa are playing better football at present, even though they were not at their best against Barcelona.

That makes Sunday more than a chance to build on a memorable European night. For United, it is an opportunity to show that the comeback can be followed by a complete performance. Merson’s verdict is a warning as much as a call for selection: keep Fernandes in the side, demand consistency from Cunha, and prove the Roma fight was not just a brief flash of resilience.
