Cole Palmer has heard a blunt message from Thomas Tuchel: England places will not be secured by reputation alone. The Chelsea forward has been left out of the squad for November’s Nations League matches, with the England manager saying Palmer “misses too many chances to impress”.

Palmer, 24, also dropped out of England’s squad for the early autumn matches. Tuchel said the decision was shaped by the attacking midfielders who were part of the previous camp, and by the work they did together.

“We have enough number 10s and we stick to the guys who were in the previous camp because we were happy with the two and a half weeks we had together,” Tuchel said. He added that England were discussing a player who was not in camp, and that opportunities to impress mattered when a player was with the squad.

The selection leaves Palmer outside England’s plans for games against Croatia at Wembley on 12 November and Spain in Madrid on 15 November. For a player who has already been part of the national-team picture, the immediate task is clear: turn future chances to join the group into performances that make the decision harder to take.

Tuchel has instead included two uncapped players, Josh King and Jobe Bellingham. King, an attacking midfielder at Fulham, is viewed by Tuchel as someone who can operate across the front line. “I want to see him on both wings,” the manager said, describing him as an extra option capable of playing in all four positions.

Jobe Bellingham’s call-up also creates the possibility of a notable family moment. The 21-year-old joins his brother Jude in the squad; they could become the first siblings to feature together in an England line-up since Gary and Phil Neville.

The squad also includes Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers among the forwards, while Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka is absent after sustaining a quadriceps injury against Bayern Munich last month. England’s November choices therefore bring both opportunity and competition into sharp view: new faces have been given a route in, while Palmer has been told that his next chance to impress must count.
