A red card and penalty conceded by Lisandro Martínez helped turn Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea into a damaging night, as their winless run reached nine games.

For 83 seconds at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United’s hopes of a response gave way to a red card, a penalty and a match that became far harder to rescue. Lisandro Martínez’s dismissal helped Chelsea secure a 2-0 win, while United’s run without victory stretched to nine games in all competitions—their worst such sequence since 1988-89.

United had been more competitive before the turning point. They created four strong first-half chances but failed to convert them: Bruno Fernandes and Amad missed the target, while Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders made two important saves. Even after Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the second half, the visitors had enough of the game to keep a comeback in view.

Then Martínez, already booked, tried to block Wesley Fofana at a corner. He raised an elbow and caught the Chelsea defender in the face. The incident was not spotted in real time, but VAR official James Bell sent referee Peter Bankes to the monitor. Martínez was sent off, and United conceded a penalty. Chelsea’s second goal and the loss of a player left the visitors facing a steep climb.

World Cup final official Darren Cann described Martínez’s actions as “inexplicable”. He said the defender made no attempt to play the ball and was rightly dismissed for two bookable offences, while also giving away a needless penalty. Former England and Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said United were still in the contest at 1-0, but that going two goals behind and down to 10 men effectively ended it.

Michael Carrick said he had not yet watched the incident back when asked whether he felt let down. He called it “a big moment in the game” and said the second goal, together with losing a player, had a major influence. United also avoided a third consecutive three-goal defeat after a tight VAR decision ruled out an Estevão goal for offside.

The defeat leaves United close to the relegation zone, while Martínez is set to miss next Sunday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo had a late effort that could not find the net, but the night’s defining image was the dismissal—and the opportunity it gave Chelsea to take control.

Carrick pointed to the quality of United’s first-half performance as a reason for encouragement, but his immediate message was simpler: “We’ve got to move forward and win football matches.” United now face Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with their Champions League qualification hopes needing a win to remain realistic.
