Chelsea’s Carabao Cup hopes ended in the harshest way: a 1-1 draw at Anfield, then a 6-5 penalty shoot-out defeat after the contest stretched into sudden death. Wesley Fofana’s miss settled it, but the shoot-out had already swung repeatedly between the sides.

The first half produced two penalties and little separation. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead from the spot after Moisés Caicedo was brought down by Ryan Gravenberch. Liverpool’s response came almost immediately: Cody Gakpo converted after Fofana handled from a corner.

Both goalkeepers had important work to do after the break. Chelsea’s Mike Penders made a series of saves, including a sharp stop from Bradley Barcola’s deflected effort and a close-range denial of Ronald Araújo. At the other end, Giorgi Mamardashvili kept out Marco Palestra’s late attempt after Chelsea built one of their best moves of the night.

The match stayed level through the closing stages. Chelsea also survived a dangerous Liverpool spell, with Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong producing blocks to prevent efforts from Florian Wirtz or Gakpo reaching the net. With no further goal, the tie went to penalties.

The shoot-out offered both teams chances to finish it. Valentin Barco struck a post, while Kostas Tsimikas sent Liverpool’s opportunity to win over the bar. Penders then saved Ryan Gravenberch’s attempt, keeping Chelsea alive, but Mamardashvili denied Emmanuel Emegha in the next exchange.

Joe Gomez converted for Liverpool, leaving Fofana with the chance to extend the contest. His effort flew over, confirming Liverpool’s 6-5 shoot-out win and ending Chelsea’s cup campaign.

For Chelsea, the night brought a strong performance from Penders and a late opening for Palestra, but those moments could not change the outcome. Liverpool held their nerve when the decisive kicks arrived; Chelsea were left to absorb a narrow exit after a match that remained level across 90 minutes.
