Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie with Chelsea came down to the narrowest of margins: after a 1-1 draw at Anfield, the home side won the shootout 6-5 to reach the quarter-finals.

Chelsea struck first late in the opening half, when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty. Liverpool’s response was immediate. Cody Gakpo also scored from the spot, bringing the teams level before the break.

The deadlock held through full-time, leaving the tie to be decided from the penalty mark. Liverpool prevailed by a single kick in the shootout, turning a tightly balanced contest into a place in the last eight.

Two penalties shaped the scoreline; the shootout settled the outcome. Chelsea had taken the lead, but Liverpool recovered quickly and kept the match level until the final whistle. Then, in the decisive sequence, the hosts found the edge they needed.

For Liverpool, the result means progression in the competition. Chelsea’s cup run ends after a contest in which neither side could separate itself during the match, and the difference came only after the 90 minutes were over.
