Michael Ballack reached two Champions League finals — with Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 and Chelsea in 2008 — and agonisingly lost both, part of a wider reputation as one of the finest players of his generation never to win the trophy. He did finally land the Premier League title in his last season at Chelsea, 2009-10.

Ricardo Quaresma born (1983)
Ricardo Quaresma perfected the "trivela" — a bending strike hit with the outside of the boot — into a signature weapon so associated with him that pundits still call the technique by his name. He won multiple league titles with Porto either side of stints at Barcelona and Inter Milan, plus a brief Chelsea loan that yielded just four appearances.
