Wayne Rooney Questions Manchester United's Summer Transfers After Loss to Man City

Wayne Rooney has voiced his concerns about Manchester United's summer transfer activity after the team suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford. Despite playing against ten men for more than an hour due to Phil Foden’s first-half red card, United could not find a way to score, with Erling Haaland netting the only goal in the 60th minute.

This defeat leaves United with just four points from their first four matches in the Premier League, while City has surged ahead with 12 points. Rooney argued that United lacked the attacking options necessary to alter the course of the game. Speaking to BBC Sport, he expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to convert possession into meaningful chances.

“I thought Manchester United were the better team and dominated City up until half-time,” Rooney commented. “But they gave away too many free-kicks and allowed the game to be slowed down, which suited City perfectly. Once City got their goal, they managed the game brilliantly.” He emphasized that after going behind, United struggled to find quality, particularly in the final third, and felt that Haaland’s goal should have been disallowed for offside.

Rooney also highlighted the glaring gap in quality on the bench, stating, “You were just waiting for someone to be brought on and make an impact today, but you looked at the bench, and there weren’t many attacking threats to call on. It was all a bit toothless.” This observation aligns with Michael Carrick’s earlier admission that the club still “want” and “need” more players.
