Fabio Cannavaro is one of the rare defenders to win the Ballon d'Or, claiming it in 2006 after captaining an Italy side that conceded just twice all tournament on their way to World Cup glory in Berlin. He capped his career with back-to-back La Liga titles at Real Madrid.

Thomas Müller effectively invented his own position — "Raumdeuter," or space interpreter — because no existing football term could describe how he found gaps defenders didn't know existed. He spent his entire career at Bayern Munich, becoming Germany's most decorated footballer ever and a two-time Champions League winner, including the 2020 treble.
